THE MORAL DECLINE OF SPORTS – In the beginning God allowed them to have baseball sports in the big cities. It kept the kids off the streets and a clean atmosphere. But since then it has declined into idolatry, violence and bad examples except for a few. Paul even wrote about the right type of exercise, “I run the race for the prize.” (I Cor. 9:24) He meant physically and spiritually. As you notice the Bible says God walked among them, He walked in Eden, etc. He always used the word “walked.” A lot of things are legal but when they use it wrong it comes as an angel of light, then it’s used to trap them. We’ve had some real gospel ball players and they left a good example, and we have a few today. But now in everything they use money instead of the love of the game. And the players have been caught with drugs, violence, murder, rapes and some of the worst crimes that we have heard of in sports. And now they sell liquor right in the stands, idolatry items, and many players for their bad works have been glorified. You’ve heard much in the news. All sports are being corrupted by money, liquor and drugs. Satan is trying to take over all sports and get rid of what it once stood for – a good example. But not anymore. Just like the music that has taken them far away. Unless the Lord takes over it’s headed for doom. There were players who would play for nothing and because they loved to help the children.
SCANDAL IN ALL SPORTS – Now here’s where the Lord enters a narrative and gives this remarkable insight. Before we get started let us remark on this. – God had his marathon runner, Elijah. He was pretty good at it! He outran the chariots and horses of Ahab for 20 miles. When he went to Jezebel at times, he also ran for his life. If he’d just thought, God would have responded. We will list some later. We thought this might give some spiritual insight. Now at this point the Lord Jesus begins to show us a horrific danger of the misuse of all types of sports. The Greeks started the decathlon. The Greeks started the Olympics. But they began to actually worship the body and their games. Also there became god-like worship and they got out of order. Now we all know about the Romans. Augustus and Julius were not too bad about sports. But later the emperors built a huge coliseum. They had their chariot races, and criminals and Christians to fight to the death and they cried for more blood. Satan got hold of it and used the good or the bad to fight lions or each other to death. They had their gladiators and it wound up into a state of madness. They stayed up with their women and parties afterward, used alcohol, drugs and it all worked into a lurid orgy. Nero was the worst. He finally set fire to the city and blamed the Christians and beheaded Apostle Paul.
SCANDAL CONTINUED – Today the Lord refers some things are occurring and gradually going the same way. The car races (the Bible said raging – Nah. 2:4) are crashing. They actually are killers out in our streets. It seems people are craving violence in all sports. – In the hockey game if some don’t get bashed and don’t see blood they feel they miss something. In fact, this is happening in all motor sports, baseball, etc. Here the Lord gives an insight that most would overlook Samson, in a way, the same as sports. – He once moved fast enough to catch 300 foxes and burned up everything below – for sport! Before this he also rent a lion apart. Afterwards he took a jawbone of an ass (Judges 15: 15) and battered 1,000 men. It must have been a bloody sight! For his victory this time he only asked for water. Also he was quite a weight lifter. After the feats and victories (and just like other athletes, the same is happening today in the sports world) he then sought out prostitutes of the city, then carried the heavy gates of Gaza to the top of the hill and slammed them down, (Judges 16:3.) But then Samson was lured by Delilah. She was a paid prostitute to find out the secret of his power. It all seems Satan gets hold of the things. Basketball Magic Johnson got aides from women they brought to him after his great games. And like Samson he prayed afterwards and told the story. We must say Samson was mistreated by the Philistines and we know the rest of the story at the end. He gained his place with God and brought down the arena doing away with God’s enemies.
